Lukas Michel of Australia became the first foreign-born golfer to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Michel, 25, outlasted Joseph Deraney, 38, of Tupelo, Mississippi, 2 & 1 at the 7,561-yard Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado on Thursday.

Michel was the fourth foreign-born player to reach the final of this event but he became the first to break through with a victory in the 38th edition of the tournament.

He’s the third Australian to reach a USGA final in 2019 and the second to win one, joining U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Gabriela Ruffels and U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up Sue Wooster.

“Being the first international to win, I mean, it’s a massive thing,” said Michel. “Being the first of anything to win something is always great, a great feeling.

“ sounds unbelievable. It sounds almost too good to be true. Yeah, I guess it will sink in in the coming hours or days. But, yeah, I mean, I’m looking forward to what comes with it in the future for my golf.”

Deraney is a stay-at-home dad who went to Mississippi State. He was 3 up through 23 holes but that’s when Michel went on a tear, making birdies on five of the next 10 holes to take a 1 up lead. He birdied the 34th hole to go 2 up and then he closed it out when both golfers parred the 35th hole.

“Over 36 holes when a guy doesn’t miss a putt inside 10 feet, eventually it was tough to beat him, right?” said Deraney. “He might have missed one putt inside 10 feet He played great and putted probably the best I’ve ever seen over the course of, what, 35 holes?”

Michel’s victory means he will receive an exemptions into the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the next two U.S. Amateur Championships and a 10-year exemption into the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

He entered the Mid-Am ranked 281st in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Michel won with William Davenport of Palm City, Florida as his caddie. Davenport lost in the Round of 64 to Stewart Hagestad, and then took over caddie duties for Michel.

JACKSON, Miss. – Tom Hoge sized up a downhill putt from 46 feet out on the 18th hole at the Country Club of Jackson.

He nailed it and the spectators sitting above him applauded. The cheers Thursday were appropriate for the shot and his sizzling first round at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Hoge sank eight birdies without a bogey and was on top of the leaderboard with an 8-under 64 when play was halted due to weather. The PGA Tour at 7 p.m. ET call it for the day and announced that the first round will resume at 7 a.m. ET on Friday.

“That was fun,” he said. “Forty feet, you’re just trying to roll it down there and get it close, end the day. To see it go in was pretty nice.”

Hoge, who needed the last putt to stay ahead of the field, wasn’t the only one to take advantage of the fast greens.

Robert Streb, Cameron Percy and Seamus Power shot 65. Two-time major champion Zach Johnson shot 67 and Joaquin Niemann, who earned his first PGA Tour victory last week, finished with a 68.

“It’s a 72-hole tournament,” Power said. “There’s plenty of time to make it up and keep it going. You’re not going to win this tournament at 7 or 8 under.

“Everyone who shoots a good one today, it’s a nice start, but you know it’s only a start. You’re going to have to get to 20 under.”

Hoge played well from the start of the day, setting the pace with four birdies in his first five holes. He hit a couple of nice wedges early and made some key putts in the middle of the round. His putt on the 18th was one of the prettiest strokes of the day.

“The greens are perfect,” Hoge said. “So if you hit it within 15 feet, you’ve got a great chance to make all the putts.”

Hoge’s play was a continuation of his strong start to the season. He finished second last week at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, the season opener. It was his best finish on the PGA Tour.

Hoge, 30, earned his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour playoffs.

“There was so much pressure there for a few weeks to play well and get back out here on the PGA Tour — so many great events,” Hoge said. “Once you get that done, it frees you up a little bit. At the same time, you know you played well, so just kind of keep it rolling.”

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is more than four months away but construction at TPC Scottsdale has already started.

The Thunderbirds House and Grounds Crew got things going on Monday, Sept. 16, the earliest the construction has ever started, but workers need to get going now because of the time and material it takes to build the luxury suites, grandstands, bleachers and all the other infrastructure for the tournament that draws the largest crowds in golf.

In 2018, tournament organizers announced a weekly attendance mark of more than 719,000. Close to 217,000 fans were tallied on Saturday that year, always the most highly attended day of the year for the Phoenix Open.

FORWARD PRESS PODCAST: David Dusek chats with Peter Kostis to discuss highlights from his diverse career, his thoughts on the young players on the PGA Tour and his opinion on whether golf has a distance problem.

In 2019, organizers made the decision not to publicly announce attendance figures.

“The only number we really care about is charity,” 2019 tournament chairman Chance Cozby said last year. “I’ve been in the group since 2010 and I can tell you that, internally, we never have any attendance goals.

“That’s never been our focus. We try to put on the best tournament we can and when the weather is good we have massive attendance and when it’s bad we still have incredible attendance. We know that’s not going to change.”

Nonetheless, the fans will come in large numbers and the course will be ready for them.

The first section where construction started for the 2020 event was the scaffolding on the 12th hole. Construction on the famed 16th hole will start Oct. 7 when crews begin the layout.

The Open is Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2020, with the final round, as is tradition, scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday. It will be the 85th edition of the tournament, which makes it one of the five oldest events on the PGA Tour.
